In Korea, my family holds a memorial ceremony every year to honor my late father. This ritual, known as jesa, is a traditional practice where we light incense, offer food, and quietly express gratitude and remembrance for our ancestors. After moving to the United States, I found myself continuing this ritual alone. One particularly lonely year, I invited my friends to share the moment with me and hosted a small gathering. Although it lacked formal procedures, we shared food and stories, naturally creating a warm space to remember those who had passed. Through this experience, my personal act of remembrance evolved into a collective exchange of memories and emotions. It led me to question how rituals transform across cultures and places, and how such sensory experiences might be reimagined within digital environments. These reflections became the foundation for my web-based project, Partycle.
